All great stories revolve around a “Hero’s Journey”

We all have a journey of our Own

Healing is a journey too; one that has YOU at the center as its hero.

Pain and injury can represent the start of something great

Where are you on the journey? Follow along below:

THE HERO’S JOURNEY OF REHABilitation

DEPARTURE

  1. Ordinary World - Traditional beliefs about the cause of pain including: genetics, bad luck, age, and overuse. You are told things like: “running is bad for your knees” and “lifting weights is dangerous.”

  2. Call to Adventure - An event triggers pain such as an accident, a fall, losing a job, a surgery, etc. Pain takes hold of daily life.

  3. Refusal of the call - You may think “It will heal on its own,” “I’ll take Advil and rest,” and “My friend knows a good surgeon that can fix me.” People may tell you it’s dangerous to exercise or move at all.

  4. Meeting the Mentor - “Maybe there’s more to healing than we think? Are you ready to learn more about yourself? Will you take a risk for a chance to truly solve your problem? Are you ready for pain to be your teacher?”

  5. Crossing the Threshold - Take the risk to learn more about your injury. Abandon fear of it getting worse and embrace curiosity while venturing deeper to explore and learn more about your body than ever before.

 INITIATION

  1. Allies - Begin guided breathing, exercises, posture training, and stress management. Practice intense awareness and presence by connecting with your body like never before. Unlock dormant parts buried by past trauma and injuries. Feel the power of your potential taking shape.

  2. Tests and Enemies - The first ‘flare up’ occurs and old injuries arise. There are tests to overcome as fear and doubt take hold again.

  3. The Abyss - Facing the true extent of your injuries, you feel compelled to quit. You may wish you never tried to change and the process is taking longer than you thought.

  4. The Ordeal - You abandon fear and continue into the pain by holding your ground. By focusing on your internal state and new skills despite the pain you’ve broken the vicious cycle and ‘slayed the dragon’.

  5. Reward - You survived on your own and broke the cycle of pain. You realize what pain is at its core: non-sense. You realize the body heals itself when properly positioned. You realize you need nothing external.

RETURN

  1. The Road Back - The return has bumps along the way. There will be repeat struggles, bruises and pain where you must remember what you accomplished. Each battle is familiar and easier than the last.

  2. Resurrection - Stress from returning to old routines of work, life, and relationships attempt to throw you back into the abyss. You must stay present and convicted in what you learned and your progress.

  3. The Elixir - You survived only due to unlocking what was deep within you. Overjoyed, you share what you have learned with those you love. Few will believe you, but everyone can see you are different. You have healed.
